    MPT and public media stations across the country are working diligently to raise awareness around the high school crisis and shine the light on people and places dedicated to enhancing youth education. To get an inside look at the progress we’re making, and problems we are  facing in Maryland, MPT met with local leaders, educators, dropout prevention experts, and staff members working for alternative learning program.     Earning a GED is a pathway to success for students that struggle in tradition classroom settings. See how the Yo! Westside Community Center is helping teens and young adults turn their lives around through alternative learning programs and the support of caring adults.


    Keeping kids involved in afterschool and summer programs is key to their academic success. Carol Reckling, Executive Director, Child First Authority, joins the conversation to discuss attendance, parent involvement and helpful strategies.     There are many teens on the streets without a place to call home. MPT's Yolanda Vazquez visits Loving Arms, Inc. the state's only shelter dedicated to homeless teenagers to speak to staff and the youth who benefit. In-studio guest: Shalita O'Neale, Founder and CEO, Hope Forward


    Early learning is key to getting a good start in school but difficult to achieve with no place to call home. A child care center in Maryland is serving homeless children and fulfilling a critical need in Maryland. In-studio guest: Kristina Kyles, Assistant State Superintendent.

    MPT host Jeff Salkin discusses high school dropout prevention efforts and solutions with Jane Sundius, Director of Education & Youth Development at the Open Society Institute.

    Dr Balfanz, Co-Director, Principal Investigator and Researcher for the Everyone Graduates Center, Johns Hopkins University, discusses key factors influencing the dropout crisis with MPT host Jeff Salkin. The Center's goal is to keep all students on the path to high school graduation and to provide students with the supports they need.
